Fatal Fort Wayne police-action shooting death of Samuel Sterling Caston – Obituary
A 59-year-old man, Samuel Sterling Caston, from Fort Wayne has been identified as the individual who was fatally shot by police on Monday in the 400 block of East Leith Street, according to the Allen County coroner.
Caston succumbed to gunshot wounds in what has been classified as the 32nd homicide of the year in Allen County, as stated by Coroner Dr. E. Jon Brandenberger.
The incident began when Fort Wayne police were dispatched around 1:30 p.m. to the 5900 block of Hessen Cassel following a report that a man had assaulted his wife and threatened her with a gun. Police identified the suspect’s vehicle on their way to the scene. The suspect deliberately collided with a squad car before fleeing.
Police pursued the vehicle until it stopped in an alley near 400 E. Leith St. The suspect then fired at the officers, hitting a police car. In response, the officers fired at the suspect, hitting him.
Although the man received medical assistance, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The weapon used by the suspect was found in his vehicle. There were no other injuries reported.
The identities of the officers involved have not been disclosed, and further details are awaited as of late Tuesday. The incident is under investigation by city police, Indiana State Police, the county prosecutor’s office, and the coroner’s office.
