On the evening of September 18, 2024, a tragic hit-and-run incident claimed the life of 30-year-old Alexandra Rose Leal on Indianapolis’ southwest side. The accident occurred around 9:40 p.m. in the 2300 block of South Lynhurst Drive, near the Sam Jones Expressway.
Police received reports of the incident and arrived to find Leal injured on the road. She was transported in critical condition to Eskenazi Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after.
Witnesses reported that Leal had exited her vehicle to retrieve something from the roadway when she was struck. Eric Holt, founder of Indy Pedestrian Safety Crisis, expressed his frustration, stating that hit-and-run accidents are particularly upsetting. He emphasized the responsibility that drivers have and the importance of treating it seriously.
This incident marks yet another hit-and-run in an area that has seen similar occurrences. In the past, there have been calls for improved signage to enhance safety, although current measures such as stop signs on nearby streets have not proven sufficient.
Holt noted that many of these incidents tend to happen in the same locations, raising concerns about pedestrian safety. The city council’s “Vision Zero” initiative aims to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2035, and a committee will soon be formed to gather ideas on reducing such tragedies.
While cameras in the area may assist in investigations, police have yet to identify the driver responsible for Leal’s death.
