Fatal Potter County car crash death of Daniel Neely – Obituary
The Texas Department of Transportation announced the closure of Loop 335 on Tuesday afternoon following a deadly collision involving an SUV and a tractor-trailer in Potter County.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident occurred when a 2004 Volvo truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer was heading northeast on Loop 335, approaching the intersection with FM 2590 (Soncy Road) around 11:30 a.m. A 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Daniel Neely, 75, of Checotah, Oklahoma, was stopped at the stop sign on FM 2590 and failed to yield to the truck, pulling directly into its path. The truck driver attempted to brake and swerve but could not avoid the collision, resulting in the semi’s front end striking the driver’s side of the Jeep.
After the crash, the semi-truck crossed over a concrete median and came to rest facing north in the center median, while the Jeep spun right, crossed a median, struck a light pole, and stopped facing east. Neely was pronounced dead at the scene by Potter County Justice of the Peace Debbie Horn. Jeanne Morgan, 75, also from Checotah and a passenger in the Jeep, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Authorities confirmed that all individuals involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Road conditions were dry and clear, with a posted speed limit of 50 mph. The driver of the truck was unharmed.
The incident is under ongoing investigation, with more information to be released as it becomes available. Following the crash, northbound State Loop 335 was temporarily closed at Amarillo Boulevard.
