WORCESTER — Jami-Lyn Fish, also known as Jay Fish, was identified as the victim of Tuesday night’s tragic pedestrian accident by her aunt. Jenna Knight, Fish’s aunt, remembered her as a devoted mother and a kind-hearted person.
“She was an incredibly kind individual who would go out of her way to help others,” Knight remarked on Thursday. “She was a fantastic mother who adored her children, who were her whole world.”
Fish, a resident of Auburn, was a mother of two and would have turned 36 next month. According to Knight, Fish had just finished her shift at LaundroMax on Mill Street when the incident occurred. She was known for her strong work ethic, juggling multiple jobs.
The accident took place near the intersection of South Ludlow and Clover streets shortly before 10 p.m. Police reports indicate that Fish and another pedestrian were hit by a vehicle while crossing the street, which then collided with a second vehicle. Both pedestrians were rushed to the hospital, but Fish was declared dead upon arrival.
The other pedestrian, identified only as a female, sustained less severe injuries.
In response to the tragedy, Knight has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral costs. Any additional funds raised will be donated to the Second Chance Animal Shelter in Fish’s memory.
“On September 17, 2024, my niece Jami-Lyn Fish, also known as Jay Fish, was taken from us too soon by a careless driver,” the GoFundMe page states. “She was a beloved mother, daughter, friend, and niece.”
Knight described Fish as an animal lover with several cats. A candlelight vigil in her honor is scheduled for Friday evening from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at the crash site on South Ludlow Street. A memorial service is also being planned.
Knight was deeply affected by Fish’s death, stating she felt overwhelmed with grief. “This has been incredibly painful, like a thousand bee stings,” Knight said. “I’m still in shock, waiting for her to call me and say ‘Good morning auntie Jen.'”
On Wednesday afternoon, a small memorial with balloons and flowers was set up at a bus stop on South Ludlow Street. Evidence from the crash, including skid marks and locations where shoes were found, was marked with spray paint.
Fish’s death adds to a series of high-profile accidents that have struck the city this summer. In response, City Manager Eric D. Batista and Mayor Joseph M. Petty have declared a “road safety and traffic violence crisis,” with the City Council and the Board of Health supporting similar declarations. The City Council has approved lowering the statutory speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph.
