Seven Mexican nationals who perished in a Mississippi bus accident over the weekend were named on Monday, including an 8-year-old boy and his 16-year-old sister. Warren County Coroner Doug L. Huskey released the names to ABC News following a preliminary investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, which determined that a tire failure caused the bus to veer off the road and overturn.
The deceased were identified as Kain Gutierrez, 8, and his sister Perla Gutierrez, 16. Angelica Palomino, also 16, was another victim. Miguel Ariaga, 61, Elia Guzman, 63, Victor Aviles Garcia, 32, and his 30-year-old brother, Moises Aviles Garcia, were also among those killed. Huskey noted that Kain Gutierrez was initially misidentified as 6 years old due to a language barrier.
The crash occurred early Saturday morning east of Vicksburg, resulting in injuries to 37 other individuals. The 2018 Volvo motor coach, en route from Atlanta to Dallas, was heading westbound on Interstate 20 when it went off the road shortly before 1 a.m. local time. The Mississippi Highway Patrol reported that six individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, and one died later at Merit Health Hospital in Vicksburg. The co-driver was not hospitalized.
The Mexican consulate has engaged a legal firm to gather more detailed information regarding the accident.
