Fatal Chicago shooting death of Luis Huesca – Obituary.

Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca was tragically shot and killed in April while returning home from his shift on the Southwest Side of the city. His name was added to a memorial wall honoring fallen officers during a poignant ceremony on Wednesday, attended by Mayor Brandon Johnson and Huesca’s family.

The emotional event took place at the Gold Star Families Memorial near Soldier Field, where Huesca’s mother, brother, and sister gathered as his name was unveiled. It was a reflective evening for the city of Chicago.

“This recognition is incredibly beautiful and meaningful,” expressed Huesca’s sister, Lily O’Brien. She shared how the sight of his name makes their loss feel more real. “It’s knowing that he’s not here, but it feels like he’s somewhere else and might come back,” O’Brien said through tears.

Huesca, who had served for six years with the Calumet Area Priority Response Team, was targeted on April 21 while still in uniform, just two days shy of his 31st birthday, in the Gage Park area. His shooting was initially reported through a ShotSpotter alert.

Though time has passed, Huesca’s mother, Edith, noted the ongoing support from the community and the Chicago Police Department has been invaluable. “The kindness and the prayers mean a lot,” she said.

During the ceremony, Police Superintendent Larry Snelling reassured Huesca’s family that he would never be forgotten. “You can tell they are great human beings—and they come from great stock,” Snelling remarked about Huesca’s family. “That’s why Luis Huesca was such a great police officer.”

As Huesca’s family joined the Gold Star Families, they received words of comfort from Dionne Mhoon, mother of another fallen officer, who assured them of the community’s support during their difficult time. “Last year, my family stood where you stand today,” Mhoon said, emphasizing solidarity.

The solemn ceremony continued as the names of 603 fallen officers were read aloud, a stark reminder of the city’s ongoing struggles with loss.
