In a tragic incident on Wednesday morning, two students and two teachers lost their lives when a 14-year-old suspect opened fire at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has named the deceased students as Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14 years old. The teachers who were killed are Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie.
In addition to the fatalities, nine other individuals—comprising eight students and one teacher—were injured and have been hospitalized. Fortunately, all are expected to recover, though their ages and further details have not been disclosed by the authorities.
The suspect, identified as Colt Gray, is currently in custody. According to GBI Director Chris Hosey, Gray will face murder charges and will be prosecuted as an adult. Sheriff Jud Smith noted that the emergency call about the active shooter was received around 10:20 a.m., prompting a rapid response from multiple agencies, including firefighters and emergency medical services. Law enforcement officers arrived on the scene quickly.
The suspect was confronted by a school resource officer and subsequently surrendered without further incident. Smith mentioned that the suspect appeared to realize that resisting could lead to a confrontation with officers, leading him to comply and be taken into custody.
During a later press conference, Hosey revealed that the weapon used was an AR-platform style firearm. The investigation is still ongoing, including how the suspect managed to bring the gun into the school and the motive behind the shooting.
