An inquest has revealed that a highly vulnerable patient, Craig Smith, tragically died after falling through a roof and landing inside a hospital oven. Smith was receiving treatment at Kettering General Hospital when he left his ward on September 7.
Hospital staff conducted a thorough search for Smith, ultimately discovering his body inside a catering oven. According to the inquest, he had fallen through the roof of the kitchen area.
Northamptonshire’s senior coroner, Anne Pember, stated, “Craig Smith died on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Kettering General Hospital. He was extremely vulnerable. A detailed search was carried out both in the hospital and at his home address.”
It wasn’t until shortly after 4 a.m. that authorities identified a hole in the roof, which led to the kitchen below where Smith had tragically landed.
While Smith’s age has not been disclosed, he was identified as a resident of Kettering. He had been admitted to Clifford Ward, a medical short-stay unit, on September 5. The inquest has not provided a provisional cause of death, but toxicology and histology tests have been ordered.
Coroner Pember has adjourned the inquest until March 20 of the following year and authorized the release of Smith’s body to his family. Investigators from Northamptonshire Police have confirmed that they do not consider the death suspicious.
