Fatal Jasper County shooting death of Jesse Gilmore – Obituary

Jesse Gilmore, 63, of Oklahoma, was found dead along Interstate 44 in Jasper County, Missouri, on Monday. Authorities have confirmed that Gilmore was murdered.

Investigators revealed that Gilmore was shot in the head in the parking lot of the Road Ranger gas station at 2101 S. Prigmore Ave. His red Chevy Cobalt, which had damage on the right side, was later found in Independence, Missouri.

Two brothers from Honduras, who are in the U.S. illegally, have been arrested in connection with the killing and other crimes. Adin Aman Cantarero Benitez, 26, allegedly approached Gilmore while he was sitting in his car around 3:30 a.m. Monday. After a brief conversation, Benitez shot Gilmore, took his car, and later met his brother behind the gas station. They then drove east on I-44, stopped near the 14.8-mile marker, and disposed of Gilmore’s body in a ditch.

The suspects, driving the victim’s car and a blue Toyota Tundra pickup, continued to Independence, Missouri. Benitez, who was driving the pickup, was arrested for DWI on Monday night, although his connection to Gilmore’s death was not yet known. The following day, the Independence Police Department responded to an incident involving Jose Cantarero Benitez, 20, who had attempted to carjack another vehicle and shot a woman in the chest. He fled the scene but was later apprehended by Kansas City police after a foot chase. Another woman had also been pistol-whipped by Jose before his arrest. The woman who was shot remains in critical condition.

Both suspects face charges, including first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and first-degree robbery. Gilmore’s autopsy is scheduled for Friday in Ozark, Missouri.

This is an ongoing investigation, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
