A tragic accident early Monday morning claimed the life of Joel Torres, a 32-year-old resident of Powell. The incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on U.S. Highway 14A, roughly a mile west of Ralston.
According to an initial report from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Torres was driving his Oldsmobile Alero when it collided with a Freightliner semi-truck that had just entered the highway from a nearby beet dump. The Alero struck the front of the truck’s second trailer, both vehicles heading east at the time of the accident.
Preliminary findings suggest that driver inattention may have played a role in the crash, and it was noted that Torres was not wearing a seat belt.
This incident marks the sixth fatal accident on Park County roads this year, an increase from four fatalities in all of 2023.
Torres is survived by his wife, Clari, and their two children, along with a wide circle of friends and family. Clari expressed the love and admiration many held for her husband, sharing the news of his passing in a heartfelt Facebook post that received numerous tributes from his colleagues and acquaintances.
“He was such a joy to everyone he was around,” commented Kevin French. “Always a smile.”
Funeral services for Joel Torres will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Grace Point, located at 550 Kattenhorn Dr. in Powell. To support his family during this difficult time, a bank account has been established at Sunlight Federal Credit Union, and a GoFundMe page is available online.
Clari Torres expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received since the tragedy. The couple had recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. “I hope people see and realize how precious life is,” she remarked.
