Fatal Fayetteville stabbing death of Joseph Woods – Obituary
A Fayetteville woman faces charges for allegedly murdering the father of her deceased infant early Tuesday, nine months after she purportedly attempted to hinder his cooperation in a child abuse investigation related to their baby’s death. Kadejah Dockery, 28, has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 40-year-old Joseph Woods, as reported by the Fayetteville Police Department.
Officers responded to a call about an unconscious man at Dockery’s apartment on Tiffany Court around 5 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Woods suffering from a stab wound and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In December, Dockery was charged with felony witness intimidation for allegedly threatening Woods with false accusations while he assisted authorities in investigating the death of their four-month-old son, Joeshine, which occurred in March 2022.
According to court documents, Woods had been a key witness against Dockery, who was charged with felony child abuse in October 2023 after an autopsy revealed the infant had cocaine in his system at the time of death.
The autopsy report indicated that the cause of death was “undetermined,” noting that while cocaine exposure might explain the death, other factors such as airway obstruction or suffocation from bedding were also possibilities. The report stated, “Despite these possibilities, no evidence favors any particular cause.”
An affidavit from the child abuse case revealed that Woods believed Dockery was responsible for their son’s death. He mentioned that before the infant passed away, Dockery expressed concerns that the child resembled him. Additionally, he provided police with a text message purportedly from Dockery that included a picture of the baby and a troubling message.
The affidavit further stated that the medical examiner concluded the infant had likely ingested cocaine one to two hours before his death. It noted that the baby, identified as JW, was not mobile and had been bottle-fed by Dockery. Moreover, Woods informed police that Dockery had a history of cocaine use.
Dockery is currently being held without bail at the Cumberland County jail.
