A 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a 60-year-old pedestrian in Renton. Urias Macario Morales-Perez faces charges of vehicular homicide and felony hit-and-run following the tragic accident that occurred on September 7.
The King County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Gerchmez passed away on September 8 due to multiple blunt force injuries sustained during the incident. Reports indicate that Morales-Perez made a left turn at the intersection of Airport Way and Rainier Avenue South, hitting Gerchmez as he crossed west in the crosswalk.
The affidavit reveals that video evidence suggests Morales-Perez accelerated without braking or showing any signs of reaction prior to the collision. Eyewitness accounts confirm that he fled the scene heading south on Rainier Avenue South.
After a search for the suspect vehicle, law enforcement apprehended Morales-Perez. Upon arrest, officers observed signs that he may have been under the influence of alcohol.
Gerchmez suffered serious head injuries and other trauma, leading to him being transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Medical Examiner was notified of his death on September 8.
Prosecutors noted that Morales-Perez was already on pretrial release for other misdemeanor charges, including hit-and-run of an attended vehicle, at the time of the incident. They are requesting a bail amount of $100,000.
An arraignment for Morales-Perez is scheduled for September 25 at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent.
