Fatal St. George pedestrian crash death of Winfield Welch – Obituary

The close-knit community of Greenfield in St. George is mourning the tragic loss of 72-year-old Winfield Welch, affectionately known as Klim, who was killed after being struck by two vehicles on Wednesday night.

Reports indicate that Welch was crossing Salters Road, returning home from his job at a poultry farm, when he was first hit by one vehicle and then struck again by another, which pinned him underneath. Emergency responders, using hydraulic rescue tools, pronounced him dead at the scene.

Residents have expressed their shock and grief over the unexpected death of a man renowned for his generosity and reliability. Esther Padmore, a neighbor and close friend for 34 years, reflected on their bond, stating, “He always treated me well. I trusted him completely, and I cared for him as if he were family.”

Padmore recounted her deep trust in Welch, even allowing him access to her home and finances. “I could call him from my house, give him money, and I knew he would come back without a doubt. He often helped me with errands and chores. I truly miss him; he was always so helpful and well-loved by everyone.”

Welch, who had a background in the hotel industry before working at the poultry farm, was remembered for his kindness and willingness to assist others. The owner of a local restaurant remarked, “He would drop everything to help anyone in need. Just the other day, I asked him to clear some grass outside my building, and he immediately stopped what he was doing to do it.”

Another neighbor shared, “We lived in the same building for a decade. He was always there to lend a hand.”

Roland Fagan expressed the profound impact Welch’s passing has had on him, noting that Welch was more than a neighbor; he was like family, often engaging with his daughter and offering support to those around him.

“This is a significant loss. He was 72 but still so active and always ready to help,” Fagan stated.

Welch is survived by a daughter and two grandchildren, one of whom is in university and the other attending Queen’s College. As the community copes with his death, many are advocating for enhanced road safety measures to prevent further tragedies.

“We can’t bring him back, but we can certainly make our roads safer,” Fagan urged. “Let’s all take a moment to slow down so everyone can arrive home safely.”
