In a tragic incident late Thursday in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam, Reniël Renato David Litecia was killed and another individual sustained serious injuries due to a stabbing, according to police reports. Authorities have apprehended a suspect, who also suffered injuries during the event.
Police spokesperson Wessel Stolle stated that the investigation is focused on the stabbing that occurred near the iconic Erasmus Bridge. While the motive remains unclear, he emphasized that they are exploring all potential scenarios.
Witnesses at the scene reported that a man attacked individuals at random using two knives while shouting “Allahu Akbar,” a phrase meaning “God is great.” Stolle confirmed that officers present heard this phrase, and it will be a significant aspect of the ongoing investigation.
A sports instructor who witnessed the attack, Reniël Renato David Litecia, intervened by striking the assailant with two sticks, successfully disarming him by throwing the knives away. He initially thought it was a fight but soon realized the seriousness of the situation as the attacker approached others.
Another police spokesperson, Kristel Arntz, indicated that the suspect first targeted an individual in an underground parking area before moving to a second victim near a busy terrace close to the bridge that crosses the New Maas River.
Arntz mentioned that it is too early to determine a clear motive for the attack. “We have arrested a suspect, and we will be questioning him. We will review all witness statements to understand the possible motivations,” she stated.
The identities of the other victim and the suspect remain undisclosed at this time.
