Police have identified the suspect involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash that occurred in Phoenix early Saturday morning. Officers were dispatched to the intersection of 16th Street and Camelback Road around 12:30 a.m. to respond to a collision between two vehicles.
Upon arrival, police discovered 29-year-old Dillon Mares with severe injuries. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators reported that the vehicle responsible for the crash remained at the scene, but the driver had fled on foot before authorities arrived. According to police, the suspect’s vehicle was traveling south on 16th Street when it ran a red light at Camelback Road, colliding with Mares’ car, which was heading west through the intersection.
The next day, 24-year-old Travis Smith contacted the Phoenix Police Department, admitting that he was the driver who fled the scene. After speaking with officers, Smith was taken to a hospital for injuries he sustained in the collision. He was later arrested and faces multiple charges, including manslaughter and fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
