Fatal Woodlands car crash claims the life of Tan Kok Seng – Obituary
Tan Kok Seng, 29, lost his life in a tragic car accident in Woodlands, leaving behind his wife and infant daughter. The accident occurred in the early hours of September 20 at the junction of Woodlands Avenue 7 and 10, as Mr. Tan was traveling back to Malaysia with a colleague after work.
Mr. Tan, a Malaysian national, was a passenger in the car when it collided with a BMW, ejecting him from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His colleague, who was driving at the time, has been arrested for careless driving.
Mr. Tan worked as a window installer in a Sembawang factory, where his wife is also employed. His family, originally from Ipoh, Malaysia, relied on Mr. Tan’s parents to help care for their daughter due to their cross-border work commitments.
Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, Mr. Tan’s older brother, who wished to remain anonymous, described him as a kind-hearted, easygoing person who enjoyed making his friends laugh. “He just got married a little over a year ago, and their daughter isn’t even a year old yet,” he shared, visibly upset by the sudden loss.
Following his death, Mr. Tan’s body was taken to Ipoh for the funeral and cremation. His ashes will be returned to Johor, where his wife’s family lives, so they can be close to her and their daughter. “She wants him nearby, and it will be easier for her to visit with their child,” explained his brother.
Both Mr. Tan’s family and his wife’s family have pledged their support to help the young widow and her child cope with the loss. “Financially, she will be okay,” Mr. Tan’s brother noted, but he acknowledged that the emotional impact of the tragedy is severe.
A soul-calling ceremony was held when Mr. Tan’s body arrived at the funeral parlour on September 21, marked by deep sorrow among family and friends. Madam Cheng, the wife of Mr. Tan’s colleague, expressed the collective grief, saying, “Everyone is heartbroken. His wife is devastated.”
The funeral arrangements were completed in Malaysia later that evening, as the families began the long process of mourning and healing after this sudden and heartbreaking loss.
