Fatal San Jose shooting death of VTA employee Duc Minh Bui – Obituary
A man has been arrested for allegedly killing a fellow VTA employee at the Chaboya Bus Yard in San Jose on Friday night.
Duc Minh Bui, 33, was taken into custody at his San Jose home around 12:15 p.m. by Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies. Authorities allege that Bui, who was also employed by the VTA, is solely responsible for the victim’s death. He has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held at the Santa Clara County Main Jail.
The shooting took place around 9:40 p.m. at the VTA’s Chaboya Division on South Seventh Street. Authorities have not yet identified a motive.
The VTA confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that the victim was shot in the parking lot of the bus yard. In response, some riders are urging the VTA to boost security for employees and passengers alike. Eva Green of Sacramento stressed the importance of prioritizing safety measures, saying, “Security should focus on protecting both the drivers and the passengers.”
Steve Ferrari, a San Jose resident, echoed these sentiments, calling for increased security presence to help ensure the safety of everyone on site.
In the wake of the shooting, the VTA has increased security across its facilities. The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office described the event as isolated, emphasizing that there is no ongoing threat to other employees or the public. On Saturday, Raj Singh, President of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 265, urged patience as the investigation unfolds, promising updates as more information becomes available.
This incident follows a tragic 2021 shooting at a VTA facility where a disgruntled employee killed nine coworkers before taking his own life. Officials have assured that support will be available to help workers cope with the trauma of this recent event.
On Sunday, about 30 people, many of whom were likely VTA employees, gathered at the bus yard to pay their respects with flowers, candles, and balloons. Cindy Chavez, a Santa Clara County Board Supervisor, expressed her condolences, acknowledging the emotional toll on those affected by the tragedy.
The VTA will continue its regular service and plans to hold a joint press conference with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office on Monday to provide further updates on the investigation.
