A tragic shooting at the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) facility in San Jose on Friday night claimed the life of Regulus Teotico, a 45-year-old father of two and VTA bus driver. Authorities have identified 33-year-old Duc Minh Bui, a fellow VTA employee, as the shooter in the incident.
According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. at the VTA Chaboya Division Yard on South Seventh Street. Officers arrived to find Teotico with gunshot wounds, and despite efforts by the San Jose Fire Department and county EMS, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators revealed that the motive behind the shooting appears to be a dispute over money owed from betting between the two men. “Although the investigation is still ongoing, we believe the motive had to do with money owed between the two men from their betting activities,” said Captain Sugey Jaimez of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
Teotico, who had worked at VTA for a decade, was described by VTA CEO Carolyn Gonor as a well-liked and dedicated employee. “We were fortunate to have him as part of our staff for 10 years,” Gonor said. “He was indeed hardworking and well-known amongst his colleagues.”
The VTA has since increased security at all its facilities in response to the incident and is providing mental health support to employees and their families. Raj Singh, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265, noted that the VTA community is reeling from the loss. “He was a good person and a pleasure to work with,” Singh said.
This marks the second deadly shooting at a VTA facility in recent years, following a 2021 incident in which an employee fatally shot nine coworkers before taking his own life. The latest tragedy has reopened old wounds for many in the VTA community, leading to the creation of a memorial where employees have been gathering to honor Teotico’s memory with flowers, candles, and messages of support.
