Authorities have confirmed the identities of the three individuals who lost their lives in a crash near Ankeny on Sunday night. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a northbound vehicle traveling on Northeast 46th Street failed to stop at a stop sign, colliding with another car heading east on Enterprise Road.
Captain Ryan Evans from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office stated that initial reports suggest speed played a significant role in the incident, noting that the northbound driver did not heed the stop sign. All three victims, including the driver of the vehicle that ran the stop sign and two occupants of the other vehicle, perished at the scene.
The northbound driver, identified as 16-year-old Chad Allen Dittmer from Elkhart, crashed into the eastbound vehicle driven by 38-year-old Kolby Joseph Drees from Bondurant. Drees’s passenger, 34-year-old Sara Elizabeth Tourte from Altoona, also died in the accident.
Drees was employed as an IT technician for the city of Ankeny. In a heartfelt Facebook tribute, the city described him as someone who was always ready to help others, regardless of his own workload. His contributions were invaluable to his colleagues, who will deeply miss his kindness and humor.
The investigation into the crash by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is ongoing, with preliminary findings indicating that speed was a contributing factor in the tragic event.
