Fatal Boston shooting death of Edwin Vinales – Obituary.
A 19-year-old, Edwin Vinales, has been apprehended in connection with a lethal shooting that occurred in Jamaica Plain. The incident took place on Monday night at the Mildred Hailey Boston Housing Authority Apartments, located on Centre Street. Police reported that they heard calls of “Shots fired” and “Man down!” shortly after the event unfolded around 9:30 p.m.
According to officials, officers on patrol responded to the sound of gunfire and discovered a man who had been shot. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but unfortunately was pronounced dead upon arrival; his identity has not yet been released.
Vinales, a Boston resident, was found with a firearm and was arrested due to existing warrants and firearms violations. Witnesses observed him fleeing the scene, discarding a semi-automatic weapon equipped with an extended magazine that holds over ten rounds.
Currently, Vinales faces no direct charges related to the shooting itself. A prosecutor noted in court that officers witnessed him discard the weapon during his escape, which led to the charges against him.
The chaotic scene extended several blocks to Heath Street, where law enforcement established another crime scene. Authorities reported finding multiple firearms at the location. Boston Police Deputy Superintendent Paul McLaughlin described the situation as a large and active crime scene affecting much of the development area.
At his arraignment in Roxbury District Court, Vinales pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a large capacity firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. He was ordered to be held without bail and is set to return to court on September 30.
His attorney cautioned against implicating Vinales in the shooting, emphasizing the need for evidence linking him to the crime.
Residents in the area expressed their shock at the rapid response from law enforcement. One nearby resident described witnessing a significant number of police vehicles and a heavy presence, suggesting that a SWAT team was mobilized in response to the situation.
On Tuesday afternoon, a memorial was established in the neighborhood for the individual who lost his life in the shooting.
