A cyclist from Newton, John Corcoran, aged 62, succumbed to injuries following a collision on Memorial Drive on Monday evening, according to police reports. Corcoran was pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital, as confirmed by the Massachusetts State Police in a statement issued the next day.
The accident occurred near the Boston University Boathouse shortly before 6 p.m. Initial investigations suggest that a man in his twenties lost control of his vehicle and collided with Corcoran. Following the impact, the victim was rushed to the hospital, where he later passed away.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, and as of Tuesday evening, no charges have been filed against the driver involved.
This tragic event marks the third cyclist fatality in Cambridge within recent months. In June, a 55-year-old woman from Florida and a 24-year-old student from MIT were also struck and killed by box trucks in the area.
Bicycling advocates have long expressed concerns about the safety of the stretch of Memorial Drive where this incident occurred. Last year, the BU Bridge Safety Alliance proposed modifications to the nearby Boston University Bridge and its intersections to enhance safety for cyclists.
In the wake of Monday’s crash, cyclist advocates took to social media to urge local officials to take decisive action.
“Unsafe infrastructure maims and kills,” wrote Clive Lawrence, a Harvard student and advocate, on X. He urged @MassDCR to implement immediate changes at the intersection, reduce the speed limit, and collaborate with local officials to ensure safety.
Cambridge City Councilor Marc McGovern expressed his sorrow over Corcoran’s passing, emphasizing the need for urgent improvements to street safety.
“I was devastated to hear of yet another cyclist death in @CambMA, the third in just a few months,” he posted on X. “We must do everything we can to make our streets safer, without delay.”
