Nelson Javier Funez Reyes, aged 37, was declared dead on September 24 at a local hospital following a shooting incident involving Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. The shooting occurred on September 21 during a traffic stop initiated by officers, which was part of a response to a reported assault with a deadly weapon.
During the incident, Officer Kenneth Kludy was injured by gunfire but has since been released from the hospital and is recovering. Officer Joshua Heater was also taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, although he did not sustain any gunshot wounds.
At a press conference, CMPD Deputy Chief David Robinson detailed that the shooting took place on Arrowood Road near South Boulevard, shortly after the police located Reyes’ vehicle. The sequence of events unfolded rapidly: just minutes after the dispatch to the assault, officers stopped the suspect’s vehicle, and shots were fired moments later.
Robinson emphasized the emotional toll such incidents have on law enforcement, stating that it deeply affects not only the officers involved but the entire community. When questioned about who fired first, he noted that an investigation would clarify the details but highlighted the quick decisions officers must make in such dangerous situations.
Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol in incidents involving officer-involved shootings.
