A pilot from San Jose has been confirmed as one of the two fatalities in a recent plane crash in Alpine County. The Alpine County Sheriff’s Office reported that 74-year-old Raphael Jones Jr. was at the controls of a small aircraft that crashed near Luther Pass, located approximately 10 miles south of South Lake Tahoe.
Officials were alerted to an overdue aircraft around 1 a.m. on Thursday, prompting their response to the crash site, as initially reported by KCRA. Upon their arrival, deputies declared both Jones and 80-year-old Jeannette Shriver Singer from Lodi deceased at the scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration stated that the single-engine Luscombe 8A took off from Lodi Airport on Wednesday afternoon.
