Fatal Glenwood Springs shooting death of Richard Grande – Obituary
A 55-year-old man, Richard Grande, lost his life after being shot by a police officer in a shopping center parking lot in Glenwood Springs on Monday afternoon, according to the local police department. The coroner’s office confirmed his identity on Wednesday, stating that he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
Police Chief Joseph Deras reported that the incident took place in the parking lot of the Glenwood Meadows shopping center, located near Meadows Drive and Wulfsohn Road, to the west of downtown Glenwood Springs. He explained that two officers on routine patrol recognized Grande, who had an outstanding warrant for gun-related offenses. When approached by the officers, Grande brandished a firearm, prompting them to retreat. One officer then discharged their weapon, hitting Grande.
As he approached his vehicle, the police officer fired again. Grande took cover behind another vehicle, and the officers maintained their position until additional first responders arrived. They ultimately made contact with Grande, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities retrieved a high-capacity firearm from the incident, and Chief Deras mentioned that it is believed Grande might have had access to more ammunition. Following the shooting, the officer involved will be placed on standard administrative leave.
