Robert S. Fawcett, 64, a retired sergeant and detective with the New York Police Department, passed away after a prolonged battle with illnesses related to 9/11. His son, Daniel Fawcett, reflected on his father’s resilience, stating, “He was a fighter through all that. He always maintained his composure, despite me losing my mind.”
Growing up on Lyon Place in Westerleigh, Robert, affectionately known as Bob, graduated from Port Richmond High School and later earned a Bachelor’s degree from Wagner College. In 1986, he followed his father’s legacy by joining the NYPD, initially serving in the 62nd Precinct in southwestern Brooklyn.
During his 21-year tenure with the NYPD, Robert rose to the rank of sergeant and became a homicide detective. Daniel recalled that after the events of 9/11, he did not see his father for three days, during which Robert worked tirelessly at the landfill site in Fresh Kills, assisting with the recovery of human remains and personal belongings.
After his service at the landfill, Robert was reassigned to the 76th precinct in Brooklyn before retiring. He later worked with Phillips & Jordan, a disaster relief organization contracted to manage recovery efforts in the aftermath of 9/11. “He was home for three months before he started losing it and decided that he needed to go back to work,” Daniel said.
In his post-NYPD life, Robert contributed significantly to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum by salvaging and donating items for various exhibits. His family remembered him as a dedicated father who passionately engaged in his children’s interests. In his leisure time, Robert enjoyed skiing, golfing, and was particularly known for his cooking skills, especially his grandmother’s pierogi recipe.
He is survived by his daughter Samantha, sons Daniel, Christopher, and Robert Brian, as well as five grandchildren. Daniel highlighted his father’s commitment to personal growth, stating, “He was always trying to improve not only himself, but his children as well.”
