On a Friday night at 11 p.m., police officers in Georgia entered the home of Marando Salmon without a warrant, leading to his death after being shot. Initially, authorities claimed that Salmon was shot after ignoring commands and reaching for a gun. However, this claim was later disproven. The officers then stated that Salmon had thrown an object at them, but it was later revealed that the object was a phone.
In November 2022, two DeKalb County police officers, Russel Mathis and Jordan Vance, unlawfully entered Salmon’s home without a warrant. Within seconds of waking him from his sleep, Mathis fired six shots, hitting Salmon four times and killing him. The officers had entered the home believing they were permitted to do so under a policy that allowed warrantless searches when immediate action was deemed necessary.
More than a year after the incident, a grand jury indicted the officers, and a lawsuit has now been filed by Salmon’s family against DeKalb County and the officers for violating his rights. The suit asserts that Mathis used unconstitutional deadly force, while Vance contributed to these violations. The incident began when the officers responded to a call about a stolen vehicle parked outside Salmon’s residence. Upon receiving no response at the door, they entered the home, which was unlocked, and proceeded upstairs where Salmon was asleep.
After the shooting, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation released conflicting statements about Salmon’s actions, initially claiming he had reached for a gun, which was later corrected to say he threw an object. A later investigation confirmed the gun found in the room was legally owned and holstered, nowhere near Salmon during the incident. Both officers have faced repercussions, with Mathis resigning and Vance being fired after the indictment.
Salmon’s death adds to a troubling history of police shootings in DeKalb County, including similar cases involving other Black men in their homes.
