Fatal Bonneville County car crash death of Mary Johnson – Obituary
Mary Johnson, 48, from Bonneville County, lost her life following a crash between her SUV and a train. The Bonneville County Coroner, Rick Taylor, confirmed that she passed away due to severe internal injuries and noted that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
The collision occurred Wednesday around 5 p.m. near the intersection of 65th South and South Yellowstone Highway. Emergency responders, including Idaho Falls firefighters and deputies, arrived to find witnesses assisting Johnson, who had been driving the SUV.
Firefighters removed her from the vehicle and rushed her to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the SUV had stopped on the railroad tracks, positioned between the crossing arms, and was not moving. A northbound Union Pacific train had initiated its emergency brakes and sounded its horn nearly a quarter mile before the crash but was unable to halt before striking the SUV.
No one else was inside the vehicle, and no additional injuries were reported.
Authorities took this opportunity to remind the public about the dangers of railroad crossings, urging both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines to avoid similar tragedies.
