Authorities have apprehended a suspect in the tragic shooting that took place on the University of Arizona campus earlier this week. On Wednesday, Ryan Romero-Encinas, 20, was charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shooting and killing Minhaj Jamshidi, a 19-year-old Pima Community College student, during a dispute at the volleyball courts late Sunday night, as reported by the University of Arizona Police Department.
Minhaj Jamshidi, originally from Afghanistan, was remembered by the Islamic Center of Tucson in a Facebook tribute. Following the incident, it was noted that Romero-Encinas had shaved his head but later surrendered to police who were searching in a Tucson apartment complex. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
On the same day that the suspect was arrested, the Tucson community mourned the loss of Jamshidi. Mourners gathered at the Islamic Center of Tucson, near the campus, to offer prayers for him before his funeral.
