Amiel Maerling dies in fatal Goshen wrong-way crash
Fatal Goshen crash death of Amiel Maerling – Obituary.
Amiel Maerling, 32, of Greenfield Park, was identified as the individual killed in a fiery wrong-way collision that occurred Wednesday night on State Route 17 in Goshen.
Authorities reported that at approximately 10:05 p.m., Orange County 911 issued an alert about a vehicle traveling east in the westbound lanes of State Route 17. The Ford F-150 pickup truck, allegedly driven by Maerling, was heading east from Sullivan County when it was spotted by Middletown Police between Exits 119 and 118. A police officer made a U-turn and attempted to stop the vehicle. Soon after, a State Trooper also pursued the truck after spotting it between Exits 120 and 119.
Maerling continued driving east at high speeds until he collided head-on with a 2020 International tractor-trailer near Exit 122. Both vehicles became engulfed in flames, and Maerling was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained serious injuries and was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center for treatment.
Middletown Police, Wallkill Town Police, and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office were all involved in attempts to stop the wrong-way driver. The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
