Fatal Oneonta, NY fire and shooting death of Jason M. Stevenson – Obituary.
The City of Oneonta’s Fire and Police Departments are investigating a fire that broke out on the afternoon of September 26. The incident occurred at 47 Chestnut Street at 1:03 p.m., with authorities arriving at the scene just three minutes later. Upon arrival, smoke was visible from the southern side of the second floor. Firefighters quickly located and extinguished flames in a second-story bedroom.
During the process, officials discovered gasoline in the room, which had contributed to the fire’s rapid spread. A 48-year-old man, identified as Jason M. Stevenson, was found deceased in the bedroom. After an initial investigation, it was suggested that Stevenson had started the fire using gasoline before taking his own life with a firearm.
The City Clerk’s Office expressed gratitude for the collaboration of all involved agencies and asked for the community’s patience as the investigation continues. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
