Fatal Beech Island, South Carolina accident claims the lives of Jerry Savage and Marcia Savage – Obituary
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is investigating the tragic deaths of four individuals in the area following Hurricane Helene, while Richmond County has confirmed five fatalities as well. These deaths, largely caused by fallen trees due to the storm’s strong winds, are expected to rise.
In Beech Island, South Carolina, 78-year-old Jerry Savage and his wife, 74-year-old Marcia Savage, were pronounced dead at 11:40 a.m. on Church Road after a tree fell through the roof of their home, crushing the couple. Their adult son, present in the home at the time, was unharmed.
Additionally, 29-year-old Michael Roukous from Dexter, New York, lost his life when a tree collapsed onto the bed and breakfast he was staying at on Casnettie Road. He was pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m. Another fatality in Aiken involved a 70-year-old man who was killed when a tree crashed into his home on Metts Park Circle. His name has yet to be released as the family is being notified.
All victims will undergo autopsies in Newberry, South Carolina, on October 2.
In Richmond County, five deaths have also been confirmed, with locations spanning Old Waynesboro Road, Lake Avenue, Morningside Drive, Windsor Spring Road, and Wedgewood Drive. Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen stated that these incidents involved fallen trees striking homes. The victims’ names have not yet been released, and authorities expect the death toll to climb due to the ongoing storm response.
Columbia County officials have reported one potential fatality in the Grovetown area, but it has not yet been confirmed.
Local authorities are urging residents to check on loved ones in the affected areas, and they recommend contacting law enforcement for well-being checks if necessary.
