The third victim of the tragic shooting on the UNLV campus Wednesday has been identified as Naoko Takemaru, a 69-year-old professor. According to the Clark County coroner’s office, Takemaru died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Takemaru, an Associate Professor of Japanese Studies at UNLV, was also an accomplished author, having written the book Women in the Language and Society of Japan: The Linguistic Roots of Bias, in addition to contributing to several academic journals.
The two other victims who lost their lives in the shooting were identified as Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, 64, of Henderson, Nevada, and Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, of Las Vegas. A 38-year-old visiting professor who sustained injuries in the attack is currently hospitalized in stable condition.
The shooter, Anthony Polito, 67, was a former professor who had applied multiple times for positions at Nevada universities, but was never hired. Polito was killed during a shootout with police detectives after the shooting. Authorities are still working to determine the motive behind the incident, though they discovered signs of financial difficulties and an eviction notice at his residence. Despite having a list of targets, none of the victims were listed among those Polito was seeking.
The investigation continues as authorities piece together the events that led to the tragic attack on UNLV’s campus.
