In the early hours of Friday morning, a tragic accident in downtown Omaha claimed the lives of three individuals and left three others injured. According to the Omaha Police Department, officers responded to the scene at the intersection of South 10th and Douglas Streets shortly before 1:30 a.m., where they discovered two vehicles, a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT and a 2017 Subaru Outback, engulfed in flames.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Rachel Bickerstaff, 33, was driving the Jeep eastbound on Douglas Street when she collided with the Subaru, which had just made a left turn onto Douglas from southbound South 10th Street. The impact caused the Subaru to hit a light pole, while the Jeep crashed into a tree and subsequently rolled over, leading to both vehicles catching fire.
Ms. Bickerstaff, along with her front-seat passenger, 38-year-old Eriviel Partida, and one child from the Jeep, were initially transported to Nebraska Medicine for treatment. They have since been moved to an out-of-state specialized burn unit. Sadly, two children were found deceased inside the Jeep, and the driver of the Subaru was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Due to the ongoing process of identifying the victims and notifying their families, the authorities have not released additional details about those involved. Investigators are consulting with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office regarding potential charges against Ms. Bickerstaff, as speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in the crash. Reports indicate that Ms. Bickerstaff has a prior DUI and reckless driving conviction.
