A student from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has been identified as the victim who was struck by a vehicle while crossing Troost Avenue on her scooter around noon on Thursday. Yuxi Wu, a talented pianist, succumbed to her injuries later in the hospital.
According to the Kansas City Police Department, Wu was attempting to navigate the street when she was hit by a car, prompting her immediate transport to the hospital. Witnesses at the scene expressed that the accident might have been preventable if a traffic signal had been installed at the intersection, where the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour. Many residents noted that drivers often exceed this limit.
In an email sent to students on Friday afternoon, Courtney Crappell, the Dean of the UMKC Conservatory, remarked that the community is profoundly impacted by this tragedy. He mentioned that he has reached out to Wu’s parents to offer condolences and assured that the university will support the family during this difficult time.
Wu had recently commenced her Master of Music degree in Piano Performance this fall. Professor Sean Chen described her as not only a dedicated student but also a kind-hearted individual who always sought self-improvement.
To assist students and staff coping with this loss, UMKC is offering counseling services. Group sessions will be held in the Grant Hall Conference Room on October 1 from 9-11 a.m., and individual counseling will be available in Suite 201 of the Brookside 51 building at designated times throughout the week.
