Fatal Island Lake hit-and-run death of Austin Stanek – Obituary.
The McHenry County Coroner’s Office has identified Austin Stanek, a 24-year-old Wauconda High School graduate, as the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred near Island Lake just days before his birthday. An autopsy revealed that Stanek died from blunt force injuries sustained in the collision, which took place in the 4300 block of Roberts Road on Friday evening.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene around 10:50 p.m. after receiving reports of a male pedestrian struck by a vehicle that fled the location. Stanek was found unconscious and not breathing, prompting firefighters to perform CPR. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital.
Preliminary investigations indicate that several pedestrians were present when an unidentified white vehicle struck Stanek, throwing him into a ditch before the vehicle continued on its way. Evidence from the scene, including debris from the vehicle, has been collected as part of the ongoing investigation, but the driver remains at large.
An obituary highlights Stanek’s passion for sports, particularly baseball and basketball, as well as his love for sand volleyball and golf. He was known for his ability to bring people together and had an easygoing demeanor that made others feel welcomed. He worked alongside his cousin in home remodeling.
Stanek is survived by his parents, brother, grandparents, and extended family, as well as his dog. A visitation and funeral service are set for October 4 at Davenport Family Funeral Home in Crystal Lake.
