Dr. Malcolm Goodchild, a respected surgeon from Columbus, was tragically killed in a wrong-way traffic accident on September 7 on Interstate 85 in Lee County. The accident involved Armin Rubido Gomez Lopez, a 41-year-old man who authorities say is in the United States illegally and has been charged with reckless manslaughter.
Gomez was arrested on Monday following his release from a Georgia hospital, where he was treated for injuries incurred during the crash. According to charging documents, he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Police noted that he had a previous DUI conviction in Lee County from 2022 and has a detainer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The collision occurred on the northbound ramp at Exit 62 when Gomez was driving southbound in the wrong direction, striking Goodchild’s Tesla head-on. Goodchild, 50, was airlifted to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital but sadly did not survive the injuries. His wife suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, and the couple leaves behind three children.
Described in his obituary as “a gifted and dedicated surgeon,” Goodchild had recently celebrated the first anniversary of his private practice, a milestone reflecting his commitment to excellence in medicine. His passing has created a significant loss for his family and the community. Lee County District Judge Russell Bush has denied Gomez bond, citing his past conviction, the severity of the charge, and his illegal immigration status.
