Fatal Omaha crash death of Michael Sales – Obituary.
Authorities have identified Michael Sales, a 70-year-old man from Council Bluffs, as the victim of a deadly collision near Gene Leahy Mall last week. The crash occurred early Friday morning and also resulted in the tragic deaths of two children in another vehicle. In total, three other individuals, including a child, sustained critical injuries.
According to the Omaha police, Sales was driving a 2017 Subaru Outback that he had just turned into from southbound 10th Street onto Douglas Street when he was struck from behind by a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep, driven by 33-year-old Rachel Bickerstaff, reportedly collided with Sales’ vehicle before crashing into a light pole, hitting a tree, and rolling over. The impact ignited both vehicles.
Police reported that the Jeep’s occupants included two children who were found deceased at the scene. A 38-year-old man and one child from the Jeep were taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for serious injuries before being transferred to a specialized burn unit out of state.
Sales, who was the only occupant of the Subaru, had just completed a night shift at a part-time job before taking a different route home. His family described him as someone who made friends easily and was always supportive, attending every volleyball game and school field trip of his daughters.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with authorities considering speed and alcohol as contributing factors. The Douglas County attorney plans to discuss potential charges against Bickerstaff.
