Authorities confirm death of Michael Shufeldt, 26, after boat capsizes – Obituary
Michael Shufeldt, a 26-year-old fishing guide, has been found dead after his boat capsized in the Columbia River nearly a week ago. The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office reported that his body was recovered on Monday morning, approximately two miles west of where he was last seen near the White Salmon River’s mouth.
Last Wednesday, Shufeldt was leading a fishing trip when unexpected bad weather caused the 24-foot vessel to sink. Six other passengers were rescued from the water, but Shufeldt was the only one who did not survive the incident.
A search operation was launched, involving a Hood River County Sheriff’s Office plane and a Coast Guard helicopter, which scoured the river throughout the day and into subsequent days.
A GoFundMe page set up in his honor describes Shufeldt as a “dedicated boat captain” and a “skilled fisherman.” He leaves behind a wife and two children.
