On August 15, a tragic hit-and-run incident occurred on Jefferson Highway in Metairie, Louisiana, resulting in the death of 37-year-old Sue Ellen Cechman. According to the Louisiana State Police, Britney Holmes, a 37-year-old security guard, was driving home after her shift when she was involved in the crash. Reports indicate that she was on her cellphone at the time, expressing frustration about pedestrians in the roadway.
Holmes allegedly struck Cechman as she crossed the street, failing to stop and assist. Surveillance footage revealed that after hitting Cechman, Holmes ran over her body and continued driving without reporting the incident. Cechman suffered multiple blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Following the accident, investigators discovered significant damage to Holmes’s vehicle, a black 2009 Nissan Sentra. It was later found at her home, having undergone repairs shortly after the crash. Authorities obtained a warrant to search Holmes’s vehicle and digital devices, uncovering searches related to windshield replacement and Cechman’s name shortly after the incident.
Holmes is facing charges of manslaughter, hit-and-run involving a fatality, and obstruction of justice. She remains in custody at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center with bail set at $375,000. The investigation highlights the tragic consequences of hit-and-run accidents and the ongoing issues of pedestrian safety in the area.
