Officials have identified the victims of a tragic plane crash that occurred on Saturday near the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Manteo, North Carolina. Among the five individuals who lost their lives were Jason Ray Campbell and Kate McAllister Neely, both residents of Southern Pines.
The accident involved a single-engine Cirrus SR-22, which went down in the woods adjacent to First Flight Airport shortly before 5:20 p.m. Witnesses reported that the aircraft was attempting its second approach to the runway when it crashed into trees and erupted in flames.
The other victims include 31-year-old Shashwat Ajit Adhikari from Silver Spring, Maryland, 44-year-old Matthew Arthur Fassnacht from Marietta, Georgia, and an unidentified 6-year-old child.
The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the incident, while National Park Service officials have expressed their heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragedy. The plane, registered to Pantheon Aviation LLC in Franklin, North Carolina, was identified by its tail number N1281F.
