Kirsty Earnshaw, a 37-year-old British bride-to-be, was found floating face down in a swimming pool during a holiday in St Lucia meant to celebrate her upcoming wedding. Her mother, Lynn, discovered her unresponsive in the water while they were vacationing together as a prelude to Kirsty’s wedding planned in the United States.
The inquest into her death revealed that authorities in St Lucia failed to provide adequate evidence despite multiple requests over three years. Senior coroner Samantha Marsh criticized the lack of a toxicology report that would have aided the investigation.
Kirsty’s mother recounted how they spent a day enjoying the pool, where Kirsty appeared to be in good spirits and aware of her surroundings. However, upon returning to the poolside, Lynn was alerted by another hotel guest about something floating in the water, which turned out to be her daughter. An ambulance was called, but Kirsty was pronounced dead at a local clinic, with drowning listed as the cause of death.
The inquest noted that Kirsty was a strong swimmer and had not been using illegal drugs. While she had previously struggled with alcohol consumption, she was reportedly working on reducing her intake. A second post-mortem examination in the UK found no external injuries but suggested she may have had an underlying heart condition, prompting a recommendation for family screening.
