Lionel Ramirez Cervantes dies in fatal Greenville County disappearance
Fatal Greenville County death of Lionel Ramirez Cervantes – Obituary.
The body of 8-year-old Lionel Ramirez Cervantes, who went missing from Bell’s Crossing Elementary School in Greenville County, South Carolina, was found Thursday afternoon in a nearby pond. Ramirez Cervantes was last seen around 11:10 a.m. on the school playground before running off the property.
According to Greenville County Schools, Ramirez Cervantes had been in a classroom with two other students and three staff members when he suddenly bolted from the room and left the building. School staff pursued him but lost sight of him in a grassy field near the school. A search began immediately.
Four hours later, a dive team located the child’s body in a pond near Lake Lennox Drive. How Ramirez Cervantes ended up there remains unclear.
Sheriff Hobart Lewis expressed the community’s heartbreak, saying, “There are a lot of broken hearts in the school and this community today. We want to thank everyone who came out to search for this young man.” Law enforcement, including SLED and the FBI, along with community volunteers, participated in the search.
In response to the tragic event, Greenville County Schools Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster announced that counselors would be available at Bell’s Crossing Elementary to support students and staff.
