A tragic incident occurred on Monday when a 93-year-old woman from Colgate lost her life after the vehicle she was in struck the median wall on Interstate 94 westbound in Waukesha County. The Wisconsin State Patrol identified the victim as Mary Phillips, who died from injuries sustained in the crash that took place around 4:10 p.m. at Moorland Road near Brookfield.
The driver of the vehicle, 57-year-old Elizabeth Phillips, who is also a resident of Colgate, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while a second passenger, 70-year-old Deborah Goutis, was also injured in the accident. Initially, it was reported that another vehicle had struck their Jeep Grand Cherokee, prompting it to lose control and hit the median wall. However, the State Patrol’s updated information indicates that the Jeep struck the median wall and lost control without another vehicle’s involvement.
After crossing all lanes of traffic, the Jeep crashed into a concrete barrier on the right shoulder. All three women were transported to a hospital, where Mary Phillips was later pronounced dead. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The incident led to the closure of I-94 westbound up to the Zoo Interchange while authorities conducted their investigation, which was cleared by 7:39 p.m. the same day.
