Fatal Weslaco car crash claims the life of Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia – Obituary.
On September 30, 2024, Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia of Cameron County Precinct 1 tragically lost his life in a car crash involving a suspected distracted driver in Weslaco, Texas. Garcia was sitting in his patrol vehicle after helping Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers with a separate crash when his cruiser was struck from behind by another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle admitted to being distracted by their phone and was also suspected of driving under the influence, according to authorities.
A search warrant for a blood test was issued, and the DPS continues to investigate the fatal crash. Garcia was rushed to a hospital in Brownsville, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Law enforcement officials and community members have expressed their condolences, with a heartfelt tribute from Cameron County Constable Precinct 5 stating, “We are forever grateful for the sacrifice made in the line of duty to keep our community safe.”
