Santa Maria girl dies in fatal Santa Barbara County crash
Fatal Santa Barbara County crash claims the life of an 11-year-old Santa Maria girl
A tragic accident near Vandenberg Village resulted in the death of an 11-year-old girl from Santa Maria and left three adults injured on Sunday afternoon. The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. when 65-year-old Jose Alfred Gonzalez was stopped at a stop sign on Santa Lucia Canyon Road, preparing to turn left onto Highway 1.
At that moment, 21-year-old Shane Giles was driving a 2005 Toyota Prius southbound on Highway 1. Gonzalez entered the intersection to make the left turn, and the Prius collided with the left side of Gonzalez’s 2020 Toyota Camry, as reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Giles sustained major injuries in the incident, while Gonzalez and another passenger, 59-year-old Luz Maria Gonzalez of Lompoc, suffered minor injuries. The young girl, who was also in the Camry, was transported to Lompoc Valley Medical Center but tragically succumbed to her injuries there.
Emergency responders, including CHP personnel and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies, arrived at the scene and ensured that all injured individuals received medical attention. The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
