The suspect in the tragic mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, has been identified as 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at the school. Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey confirmed this information during a recent press conference. The incident resulted in the deaths of two teachers and two students, with nine additional individuals injured and transported to local hospitals. Gray is expected to face murder charges and will be prosecuted as an adult, as stated by Hosey and Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith.
Authorities received reports of an active shooter at approximately 10:20 a.m. ET on Wednesday. Multiple law enforcement sources indicated that the high school had received a prior phone threat, warning of shootings at five different schools, with Apalachee being targeted first. Investigators are currently probing the origin of the call.
In response to the shooting, all schools within the Barrow County School System, including Apalachee, were placed on lockdown. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced that all available state resources would be deployed to assist in the aftermath of the incident, urging residents to pray for the safety of students and staff.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland reported that the FBI and ATF are on-site, collaborating with state and local law enforcement.
