Authorities have released the identity of a 46-year-old man who was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy during an altercation at a car dealership close to Naval Base San Diego. Gene Stewart, from Lakeside, is believed to have instigated the confrontation by firing at Detective Douglas Akers, according to the San Diego Police Department. This department investigates incidents involving the use of deadly force by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office under a countywide agreement to avoid potential conflicts of interest.
The series of events that led to the tragic incident unfolded just before 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Deputies pulled over a white Acura with two men and a woman inside on the 200 block of Mile of Cars Way, as stated by SDPD Lt. Lou Maggi. When the vehicle stopped, Stewart exited the front passenger seat and fled the scene.
While deputies searched for him, a witness alerted them that a man had run onto the property of a nearby Dodge dealership and entered a parked tow truck. Detective Akers, accompanied by an officer from the National City Police Department, approached the truck and ordered Stewart to surrender. At this moment, Stewart reportedly fired a weapon toward Akers, breaking a window on the tow truck, which led the detective to return fire. A firearm was later discovered near Stewart’s body, according to police reports.
Detective Akers, who has served with the sheriff’s office for approximately 35 years, received treatment at a hospital for minor injuries from glass shards caused by the broken window.
