Five individuals tragically lost their lives in a collision on the Cross Island Parkway in Queens on New Year’s Day, and they have now been identified. The incident occurred early Monday in a notoriously dangerous section of the parkway known as “dead man’s curve.”
At approximately 6 a.m., two vehicles—a dark blue Mazda with North Carolina plates and a white Honda—collided as they approached the curve transitioning from the northbound Cross Island Parkway to the southbound Whitestone Expressway. Reports indicate that the Mazda, traveling southbound, lost control, struck the median, collided with the Honda, which was heading northbound, and ultimately overturned in the northbound lanes.
Authorities are investigating the speed of the Mazda at the time of the accident, as they suspect it was a contributing factor. All five victims were occupants of the Mazda, and the crash’s intensity resulted in their deaths at the scene.
The driver of the Mazda has been identified as 24-year-old Kazeem Ramsahai, who was reportedly a recent North Carolina transplant originally from Queens. His passengers included 19-year-old Dayanara Benitez-Ocampo, 30-year-old Mario Ocampo, 23-year-old Salma Garcia-Diaz, and 20-year-old Jordy Bentances, all of whom were residents of Queens.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Honda was transported to New York-Presbyterian Queens and is currently in stable condition.
