Fatal Charlotte police shooting death of Nelson Javier Funez Reyes – Obituary.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have reported that Nelson Javier Funez Reyes, 37, succumbed to his injuries on September 24 after being shot by officers during a traffic stop on Arrowood Road on September 21. The two officers involved in the incident have been identified as Joshua Heater and Kenneth Kludy.
According to CMPD, Officer Kludy was struck multiple times during the exchange of gunfire but has since been discharged from the hospital and is recovering. The incident began when police responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. Just minutes later, detectives located the suspect’s vehicle, prompting officers to initiate a traffic stop around 7:30 p.m.
Shots were fired shortly after the traffic stop was initiated. While Reyes was critically injured and transported to the hospital, Officer Heater was taken as a precaution but was not struck by gunfire. CMPD Deputy Chief David Robinson expressed that such events deeply impact the entire law enforcement community and the broader community itself.
