Fatal Sandy Spring car crash death of Sanaa Virtue Vil – Obituary
Montgomery County authorities have identified the 17-year-old who lost her life in a car accident on Wednesday as Sanaa Virtue Vil, a senior at Sherwood High School. According to the Montgomery County Police Department, Vil was driving her 2005 Toyota Corolla northbound on Norwood Road near Ashton Forest Way when she failed to make a turn, crashing into a wooden telephone pole around 8 a.m. on October 2.
Emergency responders from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue and police arrived at the scene and pulled Vil, along with two other passengers – both 17 years old, a girl and a boy – from the vehicle. Tragically, Vil succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while the two other teens were transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition.
Vil, who was a member of the Black Student Union and played for the Sherwood High School Varsity Girls’ Basketball team, was described by Principal Timothy Britton as an exceptional student. In a message to the school community, Britton said, “Losing someone so young is an incredibly painful experience. Sanaa was a bright light, both in the classroom and on the basketball court. We are all deeply saddened, and our thoughts are with her family during this unimaginable time.”
The Sherwood Girls’ Basketball team also expressed their grief on social media, recalling Sanaa as a natural leader, both kind-hearted and fiercely competitive. “She brought energy and joy wherever she went,” the team shared. “On the court, she was a force, capable of outrunning anyone.”
Counseling teams will be available at the school in the coming days to support students and staff as they cope with this tragic loss.
